Explain and Critically Discuss How Important Is the Role of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) In the Practice of Psychology
Evidence-based therapy (EBT) is generally known as evidence-based practice (EBP). Evidence-based practice in psychology (EBPP) is the unification of the most outstanding research with clinical expertise in the background of patient traits, values, and choices (University of Sydney, 2020). Both the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the American Psychological Association regard EBP/EBT as an excellent practice (Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses, 2020). Psychology is the systematic analysis of intelligence and conduct and the use of that knowledge for a greater good (Henriques, 2011). EBP involves excellent research evidence, clinical knowledge, and patient principles (Rousseau & Gunia, 2016). This essay will explain and critically discuss the role and significance of EBP in the application of psychology and critically appraise the key theories, views, and appropriate research in the activities of psychology.
Limitations Inherent in These Approaches
Occupational Psychology
Occupational Psychology is the analysis of how people behave in the workplace environment (Fordjour, & Chan, 2020). Critics argue that some of the practices in occupational psychology are unproven (Anderson et al., 2010). A lot of the published research that is available is not relevant to practice. Occupational psychology ignores advancements in other areas of psychology (Anderson et al. 2010). It is prejudiced towards what the managers are concerned about. This mutes discussion about what the principles of occupational psychology ought to be (Anderson et al., 2010).
Community psychology is a division of psychology that is involved with how individuals interact with the environment and the techniques society influences how humans and the community function (Steltenpohl et al., 2020).
The Limitations of Competencies Themselves
Community psychologies based outside America are considerably controlled by community psychology practiced in America. From this perspective, it is evident that the practice of community psychology serves a purpose and puts some accounts of the world at an unfair advantage over others (Dzidic et al., 2013).
Forensic psychology is a psychological analysis of crime that uses scientific behavior to study crime (Whiteley, 2020). Forensic scientists assist judges, juries, lawyers, and law enforcement officers in applying justice by contributing outcomes and results (Yadav, 2017). It lacks registration that should give specific privileges and accountability to forensic scientists. People from diverse fields with relevant qualifications are hired without any registration or documentation (Yadav, 2017).
Professional Credentials
An example of this is falsifying credentials in a court of law. Misstating can include giving incorrect details on where a person earned his or her degree (e.g. alleging that a degree was acquired from a specific institution but in actual sense, it was not), specialist certifications or licensures, etc. (Yadav, 2017).
Ways of Surmounting or Countering These disadvantages
EBP informs decisions made by community psychologists. It assists these professionals to use practice established on proven evidence. When the therapists adjust treatment, they should be guided by the most recent evidence available. Professional interpretation should be applied to decide if the proof corresponds with every characteristic of the customer’s circumstances. Specific consideration should be given to the choices and cultures of the client (Bennett & Bennett, 2000). Models founded in research, such as the one created by Anderson should also be adopted (Cartwright & Cooper, 2008). Some courts have decided that the suitability of scientific evidence relies on its scientific validity. These courts can decide scientific validity by using the following criteria: if the method or theory can or has been tested, if it has been taken through peer review, if it has a noticed rate of error, or presence of principles, and has been largely accepted in the scientific community (Schneider, 2009). Occupational psychologists should adopt a customer-centered practice. Occupational psychologists’ EBP must be morally compatible with its adopted client-centered principles to avoid an inclination towards pretense. Qualitative research methods are the most suitable to recognize and discuss client priorities (Hammell, 2001).
Conclusion This essay explained and critically appraised the role and importance of EBP in the practice of psychology and critically evaluated the key theories, views, and appropriate research in the activities of psychology. In this paper, we discussed that the advancement and application of competencies for community psychology, based on mechanistic and positivist concepts, is not favorable for the principles and application of community psychology. The growth and application of competencies for community psychology are based on premises that don’t challenge the existing status quo. Each forensic organization needs to adopt ethical codes to lead its forensic scientists to carry out its mandate with passion and honesty, based on tested theories and methods.
