African American Slave during the Revolutionary War

Compare and Contrast Response

Introduction

The two essays have created a lot of controversy in their respective subjects. In an African American Slave during the Revolutionary War, the American Revolution widely built a racial personality among all the races involved. In the Lack of freedom for Chinese Immigrants, the Chinese who went to California during the “mass exodus to California” lost a lot of money because they were made to pay exorbitant taxes. An analysis of the two essays reveals that they have major similarities and differences, which enables us to recognize the context, communal circumstances, and confines of freedom throughout this period.

Summaries of both subjects

Revolution

The American Revolutionary War was contested between Britain and its colonies in America, resulting in the toppling of the rule by the British and the founding of the United States of America. Throughout the war, blacks gave their allegiance to the faction that appeared to give them the greatest possibility of freedom (John, 71). A majority of these blacks were slaves were owned by cruel masters. They could not stand the thoughts of returning to serve their masters, and they devoted themselves to fight for their freedom by engaging in the war.

The Mass exodus to California

The Chinese immigrants went to California in pursuit of riches. They hoped to send their poor kin money or return home after acquiring wealth. To the Chinese, America symbolized the desire for self-rule. The British had dominated China after defeating it in the Opium War. The resulting economic woes made the Chinese to look for economic opportunities abroad.

Comparison of similarities between the two essays

In both essays, the characters faced social, political and economic challenges. In the Lack of freedom for Chinese Immigrants, the Chinese lacked freedom since their wealth was plundered after receiving beatings from people of other nationalities. The Chinese had travelled to California with dreams of discovering gold to ship to their kin back home (Mack 132). However, they ended losing their property when they were taxed highly, and they were banned from immigrating to America.

In an African American Slave during the Revolutionary War, slaves who engaged in the revolutionary war were given freedom in the United States of America. On the other hand, their colleagues were not assured of their freedom in Britain. African Americans who renounced taking oaths of allegiance were deprived of their property and some of them were imprisoned (John, 71).

Comparison of differences between the two essays

In the Lack of freedom for Chinese Immigrants, the Chinese were the subjects of the essay. Chinese immigrants never participated in the political affairs of America. While other immigrants were welcomed, the Chinese were frowned upon and looked at as enemies and thieves because they seized the gold mines that were left by the Americans and discovered plenty of gold (Chi).

In an African American Slave during the Revolutionary War, the Black Americans slaves were the subjects of the essay. Black Americans extensively fought the British for a revolution they hoped would give them freedom and put an end to slavery. Regardless of their skin color, the whites united with the blacks to fight for their freedom (Corbett et al. 175).

How these similarities and differences help us better understand the meaning, social conditions, and boundaries of freedom during this time period

These similarities and differences help us to grasp the different ideas of freedom during this time. To the Chinese, freedom meant self-rule and wealth. The Chinese had borrowed money to finance their trips to America but due to the high taxes in California, they could not recover their investment. They had hoped that wealth could give them financial and social freedom. However, their financial challenges created numerous boundaries for their freedom. The ones who had sold all their property or borrowed from their kin found it even more difficult to return to China.

Blacks could not enjoy freedom because they were discriminated against based on their skin color. Freedom was the common purpose that united the white rebels and blacks to fight for their freedom. The American Revolutionary War offered new opportunities for the Indians, Blacks and slaves to improve their social conditions and freedom.

Conclusion This essay analyzed the two essays to compare and contrast the similarities and differences between them and show how these similarities and differences help us to grasp the limits, social conditions, and meaning of freedom during this time. The American gold rush had attracted immigrants from all over the world. The challenges the Chinese faced in California during the time are an illustration of the imperfections of American history. Immigrants who joined the war only considered how they would benefit from the war before deciding which faction to support. The American Revolution temporarily unified immigrants and whites.
